Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro is a must-see as a unique facility in terms of its complexity – a network of underground palaces that were both “cathedrals” and “train stations” for Soviet residents.
The metro is one of Moscow’s calling cards. A lot of factors are intertwined here: architectural merits (the Moscow metro is recognized as a world masterpiece), social objectives set by the Soviet government (to ensure rapid travel for the workforce), and military goals (the Moscow metro was designed as a bomb shelter in the event of a nuclear war; a lot of facilities it contains are secret even today).
To a large extent, the history of the metro reflects the history of Russia: the role of the individual and society in Russia, the way the country developed economically, the continuity of cultural traditions.
A guided tour through the Moscow Metro (not recommended during rush hour) is an interesting cultural and historical excursion.
